Pledge Week

Have I ever told you how much I hate pledge week?

Yes, I know. Your local public radio station needs money, and this is how they get it. I guess “community radio” does too, since KXCI does the same thing.

What irks me is the smug nature of it all. Okay, we should acknowledge that we listen to NPR programing because it is all high minded except for Car Talk and yadda yadda yadda. But something about the appeals smack of “We public radio listeners are superior to that guy down the way that listens to Jon Justice…” and that really bugs me. Not least of which is that it feeds the notion that left-of-center folks are elitist fops.

Maybe this is done because some marketing guru told them once that appealing to some sense of superiority generates contributions. It doesn’t say much about us, does it?

Still, I can listen to KUAZ during pledge week, which isn’t something I can say about KUAT. They seem to have gotten better about this, but there are still those “pledge week specials” where regular programming is interrupted by some ridiculous show designed to appeal to upper middle class babyboomers. How many times did they show that darned Peter, Paul and Mary reunion?

I don’t quite get how this is supposed to work.

“Please, give now so we can continue to show you great programming like this Leo Buscaglia special…”

“Wait a second, you only show this special when you want money. I tuned in for Nova!”

(Okay, the Buscaglia reference tells you how long I’ve been frustrated.)

Why not just admit they are taking your favorite shows hostage and will show you Suze Orman until you give them money?

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.
