Yoshida Joins GBL Team

Eri Yoshida has signed to pitch for the Chico Outlaws in the Golden Baseball league. She’s the first woman to pitch in American professional baseball since Ila Borders in 2000. Why this matters for us Tucsonans is that she will be playing in the same league as the Tucson Toros. The Outlaws first come to Hi Corbett in a three game stand on June 18th.

The GBL is crowing about Yoshida, and this is not without good reason given the advanced praise she’s gotten.

In case you are wondering, there have been four women who have pitched in American professional baseball:

Alta Weiss played for the minor league Vermillion Independents and her own barn storming team, Weiss All Stars.
Jackie Mitchell pitched for the Chatanooga Lookouts and struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1931.
Maime “Peanut” Johnson played for the Indianapolis Clowns and was one of the Negro League players honored by being drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2008. The Clowns, by the way, had two other women players, Connie Morgan and Toni Stone.
Borders, mentioned above, played on a series of minor league teams from 1997-2000

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

I was interviewed by Fox 11 last night about the Tucson Toros. This was because a couple of months ago I, as a lark, started a Toros fan group on Facebook. Now, I guess, I am the go to fan guy.

Is this too much responsibility?

On a related note, I might be Santa Claus at the Eckstrom Christmas wrapping party. The usual Santa, Joel Brown, has another commitment. I am the only guy tall enough to fit a suit that was made for Joel.

Ho Ho Ho.

What’s a matter kid, you’ll put your eye out.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

I just got a new video camera, and I downloaded some software with it. Here are some shots I took of Trent Oeltjen, a member of the Tucson Sidewinders that I kind of know. I tried to do this in two different styles.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.

Sidewinders 4 – Portland 3

Went to see our champion Tucson Sidewinders play against the Portland Beavers. A couple of names struck me funny.

The Beavers feature a guy named Keoni Ruth. Yeah, no pressure with that last name. He’s Hawaiian. You think he could hook me up with Tasha Kai?

The Beavers also feature a pitcher named Will Startup. Will Startup actually won’t start up, because he is actually a closer.

Tucson’s runs, by the way, were scored by the two Venezuelans Alexander Romero, Carlos Gonzalez, with Carlos Quentin scoring in the first and the third.

I never realized what a big deal it is whether or not I write the “K” forward or backward on my scoresheet. Luckily, Laura Elías set me straight on that one.

Hasta la proxima. Do zobaczenia.
